"Prolific production and direction talent."
- The Irish Times
Anne Sommerfield is an award-winning producer, director and writer with two decades of experience bringing the natural world to life on screen. With a background in zoology, her work sits at the intersection of science, storytelling and visual creativity — combining a deep understanding of animal behaviour and human nature, with a passion for finding extraordinary stories in the world around us.
Curiosity is at the heart of her filmmaking. Whether following the intimate lives of animals, exploring unfamiliar environments or finding a fresh way into a complex scientific subject, her instinct is always to look beyond the obvious. She is drawn to stories with character, surprise and emotional truth, and to the moments that can make audiences see the natural world differently.
Her early work on Meerkat Manor helped establish this distinctive approach to natural-history storytelling. The series transformed the lives of a family of meerkats into compelling, character-driven television and became a global phenomenon, earning major international awards including a Wildscreen Panda Award and Gold Medals at the New York Festivals, alongside Emmy recognition. Her directing was also recognised by Broadcast with its Hotshot Directors award.
That mix of scientific knowledge and creative storytelling has remained central to her work. She thrives on ambitious productions where the filmmaking itself can be part of the adventure — from pioneering new ways of filming animals to working in demanding locations and finding stories within thousands of hours of footage. On Animals With Cameras, she worked alongside scientists and technical specialists to explore animal behaviour from an entirely new perspective, using innovative miniature cameras carried by the animals themselves.
Her work on Great Barrier Reef with David Attenborough brought together her love of science, visual storytelling and ambitious production on an extraordinary scale. The series received a BAFTA nomination and won the Televisual Bulldog Award for Best Documentary and the Global Factual Lumière Award for Best 4K Documentary.
Alongside directing and producing, her experience spans development, writing and editorial. She brings a hands-on, instinctive approach to storytelling — equally comfortable developing an idea from the first spark, shaping a complex narrative in the edit or solving the practical challenges that can stand between an ambitious idea and the finished film.
There is a strong sense of discovery running through her work. The aim is not simply to show audiences something remarkable, but to make them feel that they have discovered it for themselves. Whether working on an intimate character story or an ambitious international production, her films combine scientific rigour with imagination, emotional storytelling and a genuine sense of wonder.
